Schrödinger's Jeff
I usually bring way too many books. I’m comfortable with that I like having a few extra boxes in the trunk. But flying to a show is different. An extra box of books is $60 to put on a plane, and then $60 back.
I think most people who fly to shows do to wanting to sell out on the last day, right before closing. That means you’ve brought exactly the right number of things to sell. You didn’t lose any sales, and you didn’t lug anything there you now need to lug back.
I’ll find out how close I came to that mark at the end of the day today.
Until then, I’m living life in Schrodinger’s box.
Every single interaction I’ve have I’ve both wanted and not wanted to happen. Hey, maybe they’ll buy a book. Oh, no, but if they buy it too soon then I run out too fast. Oh, not they want the book I have the least of! Oh yes, they’re going away without buying a book; score!
Buying all four books at once? You lousy bum, how dare you.
Not buying anything? Phew, thanks!
[ten minutes later]
Not buying anything? Aw, cmon, I don’t want to bring these books back on the plane!
[ten minutes later]
Shoot, I’m selling far too well, I’ll be out by Saturday morning.
[ten minutes later]
I’m going to die right here, buried in this pile of unsold paperbacks.
It’s been an usual weekend. No matter hwo I end up selling, some part of me will be dispapointed. I guess the upside is some part of me will also be glad.
And 100% of me will be glad once I get through my redeye tonight and get to see my family and sleep in my own bed again, in my own time zone.
